As I walked into the expansive grounds of the Transcorp HiltonHotel in Abuja, the venue of the launch of the book, I kept asking myself what exactly was I doing there.
The armada of security men milling around the venue caught my fancy and interest
What we had there was a whole army, Fully armed to the teeth enough to push Russia out of Ukraine
The weapons on display at that Hotel was enough to destabilise world peace
Yet the obviously well-trained personnel about 1,000 in number were left lazing around, eating ‘guru and epa’ while waiting for their principals who had gone to honour a spoilt ex-dictator.
When I found myself at the door and showed my special invite with his picture on it, I was not allowed entry.
The President was inside, and as such, I could not enter.
I would have if I had wanted cos that their last line of defence was as porous as a Prostitutes private part.
I was simply overwhelmed with shame that I was even in that vicinity
I was amongst the young boys who thronged the Ikorodu Road theatre of demonstration.
I saw people mowed down in their prime and saw the tears and anguish that came with that.
I was an IBB fan. My long Essay at the famous Political Science department of the University of Ibadan was dedicated to him.
I wrote essays in his honour and gave excuses on his behalf as he dribbled Nigerians in a faux attempt at returning us to democracy
But alas he was a chicken. In a note to me last night by one of MKO Abiolas’s more cerebral. Daughters – a General afraid for his life? But a jaiye jaiye socialite faced death with courage
That is the shame we heard yesterday – ohh it was Abacha, they would have killed me and over 30 years after, an apology and the buckstops at my table kinda talk which is self-serving and insulting to Nigerians
Would he have dared called Abachas name where he alive and in that hall?
Throughout Abachas lifetime, he never mentioned the Generals who threatened his life.
For his effort, he was rewarded with N17b of Nigerians wealth but nestled in the hands of his beneficiaries
I watched one of them tell us how he saved his life and for that, he donated N500m to a man who should be facing a serious panel of enquiry this morning after that admission
Nigerians are very famous for their penchant for quickly forgiving and moving on, but this one is very painful, to put it mildly.
We still suffer the socio-political consequences of his cowardice
He was a man who was so ambitious that he had plotted his emergence quite early, and when he got it, he ran for his life by stepping aside without doing the right thing – giving Abiola his mandate.
He should give penance. He should go to Abiola’s grave and beg for forgiveness; he should donate all of that N17b to Nigerian orphans and widows and show genuine remorse. Maybe we would forgive him cos, for now, he is just a side stool in our history.
