Godrey is one of the 10 amazing women, we are honouring during our plays this easter
This year, we are unapologetically for women having realised that in all 41 of our previous plays, we did not use one single female director
So this year, we have gone overboard by selecting six of the finest female directors and not stopping at that have gone ahead to push for an all-female production suite, all-female crew, 70% female cast, and even the jingle was produced by a female
Not stopping, I decided to celebrate 10 amazing women who are not in your face, not public, but very strategic in their homes, very supportive of society, and very impactful.
A lot of people have never heard of Godrey , but a lot of people especially in business and capital markets know of Gabriel Ogbechie
This couple own the massive Rain Oil franchise, one of Nigeria’s most important players in the Oil and Gas sector
What people don’t see is the huge contribution of Godrey , who is Executive Director, wife, mother, aunt, and in my case, a friend to the massive success that is both Gabriel – one of the richest men around and Rain Oil
I met Godrey at the Lagos Business School – SMP 32 to be precise
Apart from her beauty and British royalty-type dressing, you would not notice her
These were her last days at Fidelity Bank and I remember asking her why she was resigning and she quietly said – I’m joining my husband in her business
I didn’t know her husband was Gabriel and the business was Rain Oil
She was subtly matronly in class and was a calming influence in the sometimes heated debates that enveloped the interactive sessions that was tutelage at LBS
She later emerged as Vice President of our alumni class where she continued to mother me, the errant Social Secretary
Godrey remains a pivotal player in Nigeria’s economy. She covers HR and other such strategic areas in the Conglomerate – overseeing Human Capital, operations and the rest
In this capacity, she keeps the boat steady, ensures smooth flow of policy especially in its execution and provides the team with the much vaunted calming vision it requires to move at steady breakneck speed
But Godrey’s claim to fame is her role in the home.
She is a dedicated mother and wife who still cooks for Gabriel hence his bulging big tummy
But what do you expect from a woman from Northern Cross River, where I hear the plantains are longer than some people’s legs?
I have watched her very closely hosting one of Gabriel’s many parties.
These parties are very vital to the ongoing success of their Conglomerate and at those parties, Godrey paints a picture of a non-intrusive yet very involved hostess
Gabriel’s parties like my older brother Dere Otubu are always high octane
The economic power elite nestle at his parties and there u see Godrey , mixing, flowing and ensuring everything is working without being in your face and reminding you that she is madam
Why I approve of her succinctly is because she does not distract her hubby, loves her family to pieces and continues to contribute very powerfully to the business all with no headache
You will not understand that – no headache part until you hear some stories then you will realise just how powerful Godfrey’s message to Nigerian women is
Godrey is my friend and sister even though we have not eaten Afang in a bit, she remains a beacon to Nigerian womanhood and this is why, I am honouring her at Dora and Kokoro
Meet Godfrey at Dora this easter and find out why she is simply just an amazing specimen of Nigerian womanhood
Come and beat me
Thanks
Duke of Shomolu
