I watched the lineup that announced Hamzat as the choice for Lagos and shook my head
The lineup was gerontocracy in its purest form
I will never say ill about the elderly so I don’t get cursed but that lineup could only elicit pity for Lagos and its citizens
A vibrant city state rendered voiceless by the elderly who still hold on to power with one hand and medications and walking sticks on the other
But then again do you blame the Methuselahs who should be enjoying the fruits of their long stay on earth with pure and true rest?
No, we can’t blame them when we have been cursed by infantile adults who have refused to grow up
Cowardly young men, who run to these old men for validation, worms who are given leadership roles but sell them to taste the golden pits that encircle the thighs of a thousand whores
Leaders who fail to rise to the demands of their roles and as such run to hide behind the withering backs of these old men who in turn take reward for their protection by reserving the rights to choose our leaders
They sit in conclaves, with dentures set right and intravenous fluids flowing through their veins, choosing which one of their ill-brought-up sons, they should risk leadership with
Then they come out, in a long line and with ambulances on standby to announce the latest clown that is expected to rule us for the next four years
This was a country. Yes, this was a country where 33-year-olds ran a civil war. Yes a country where 20 year olds where federal Ministers and where 40-year-olds took on the dreaded Apartheid regime and ran it around
Shame be gets us today cos our young men rush to collect bags of rice to sell their destiny
Young men hail and praise the President’s son for showing enough courage to drive himself during a campaign and those whose age mates where Military Heads of state not long ago, jump with joy as they watch a boy drive himself simply because he has a beard and bares tge same surname as a famous fountain in Lagos Island whose waters have run dry
It is as a result of our collective failure that our elders have not been able to retire cos we have not been able to show that we can rule ourselves and these elders with really no buoyancy rush to pick one person cos he – has been patient
Sickening and sad but who do we blame but ourselves who will not let our elders retire peacefully.
We are truly a wasted generation and shame really begets us. Rubbish
Come and beat me
