Ola Olabinjo – connecting the dots

Edgar, you don’t know Ola Olabinjo?

That was my senior, Moyo, as he introduced me to the tall, dark gentleman seated beside him at the prestigious Liquid Hub one evening

Aghh, I know him o, I shouted. He was my oga at FCMB

Moyo continued, Edgar, you know Bimbo Olabinjo, she was my set and your senior at Command. I screamed – Yes na

This is her elder brother, and we used to join the school bus together at Myoung Barracks in Yaba

What Senior Moyo didn’t know was that I had missed Ola at FCMB, but his work spoke for him; I had also gleaned him very partially at Heritage Bank and marketed him in his early days at Skystone Capital

A few days later, I met up with Mr Labinjo at his expansive office somewhere in Victoria Island

My dad was a soldier, he told me, and we grew up in Shomolu and went on to share an upbringing that was quite similar to mine

The similarity ends there, as he has gone ahead to build one of Nigeria’s most prestigious Corporate and Investment banking franchises

His success has empowered him to drive an impact vision that has continued to touch lives in Health, education, and community

His Ola Olabinjo Foundation is one of the most effective below-the-radar interventionist vehicles that you can find anywhere

But the man would rather just lay low and let his actions speak

As I write this, he has sent me a chat: Edgar,, hold, I need to talk to you

I had made the mistake of informing him that I was doing this piece, and I’m sure his goose pimples would be raging

He has cancelled the podcast where I planned to explore his deep knowledge of the economy and business – very few hold his clarity in that space – as he tells me, Edgar, leave me ooo

But as I don’t listen to advice, I have refused to leave him this one time as I push out this surface-level encomium on a Man who has decidedly chosen to be silent in the face of momentous ‘doings’

Well done, sir

You may now come and beat me

Thank you

Duke of Shomolu
