A young designer had appoached me with an offer to design a wrap around skirt
He had said that I was the only person he knew that could carry it
Well in my dressing, I try to follow my mood and in most times, I can be mischievously bold
So I wear whatever suits me leaving people to – shame on my behalf- or say wow
So the young lad brought the skirt and as expected it didn’t flow
The wrap around skirt for men is delicate.
You know we dont have hips or big bums to carry it out so it us usually a delicate assortment of tricks to make it sit well on a man
The Scots have perfected it with a volley of pleats that makes it bounce out and look beautifully fluffy
This boys own looked like a palm tree wearing a skirt.
I was ram rod straight and with no hips or bum, I looked like that Yoruba Masquerade they call Ere – the masquerade on stills or the one that used to grow tall and then drop short instantly
I didn’t like it but didnt want to discourage the young designer
I paid for it and then promptly dashed Zara who looked like the Princess of Wales in it
Despite this, he had stoked my interest in the wrap around skirt
It fitted my personality. It was bold and carefree on a man. It taunted people and made the wearer look and feel elegantly showy
So I went to Mudi ti ask for it
Mudi took a long time and when I asked why, he said the material would have to be brought in since it demanded a certain kind
Mudi is a genius. His creativity is almost ephemeral and spiritual.
He could be talking to you this minute and the next minute, he is sketching something and voila you have a design that would draw spittle from your mouth in amazement
Yday, he called me to his Anthony Shop for a fitting
He had designed one of the most complicated yet simple wrap around skirts that I have ever seen
Apart from the Scottish plaid type, I have seen many men wear it with ankle length boots on the high street in London
But what Mudi put on my waist yday was simply a classic work of art
It had stainless steel buckles at one end and came with two pin point clips on the other end which held down the skirt to my waist while the buckle played an essential aesthetic role
Then one side of the skirt came with the scottish plaids cascading to the ankle and hidden by a top which was smooth plain.
He garnished it with two back pockets which came with white threading giving you that ‘City Jeans’ feel and ended the trapping with an inch of elastic band at the nape of my back giving me a firm holding
Then we both agreed for a side pocket so that I could put my hands to further boost my confidence
While i wanted a side Pocket, Mudi chose an oblong outside pocket that sits on my laps but slightly demure that it doesn’t extract from the fluid flow of the beautiful tapestry that is the cotton he used
As I went for my fitting in his Lekki Show room which I must say remains eye catching, he asked me to spread my legs.
One thing that most designers fail to take into consideration is comfort
Comfort is everything. It boosts confidence, gait and carriage making you float like a butterfly and sting haters like a bee – kai, Mohammed Ali
As I sashayed his beautiful show room like a model on a Paris Catwalk, I could feel the luscious material gently carrass my naked thighs
Its touch was like the touch of a beautiful young virgin touching a man for the first time
I loved the texture, it made me gently close my eyes in quick submission to its allure
Then Mudi jumped from his seat, his Mohawk hairstyle pushing the sunrays from the window
Where you want wear am go?
I want wear am go Dr Ebose wife birthday
Never wear am yet, make i sew one white lace like material like this so he go bring out the skirt
I said ok, knowing fully well that nothing will change my mind from wearing the skirt with nothing on top except my sterling Silver chain with a skull on it and with my 1938 brogues shoe my brother Robert Mbonu gave me and which I had erroneously announced that Mazi Princewill Utchay gave me
When I work into Mrs Ebose’s 50th with my Skirt and no shirt and my Brogues, any body that doesnt like it can come and beat me
