Zara Erinoluwa Edgar

Something tells me that Zara, my last daughter for now, is going to be my pillar

For now, she ignores me, only brings my BP tea upstairs and says – Joe, you have not finished your granula and vanishes to her new phone

Zara is blessed with extreme beauty and brains. She’s also imbued with leadership qualities that have seen her emerge as a prefect, following a long tradition of Edgar siblings emerging as prefects in their schools.

I once watched her scold an intense basketball male player in her school who was not following the routine, and I shouted aghhh Zaraaaaaa, he is a boy oooo

Zara is introverted, very unlike us, and would instead be found alone in her room on the phone with her friends

I’ve watched her in her circle, and although she does the customary noise, she remains more in tune with her innerself

Zara is a contradiction, having a very close resemblance to her mother, complete with the forehead, but carries the imposing physique from my mother’s side, where giants lay – Mayen and Charley

Zara is tall and imposing. Elegant with brownish caramel skin and a warm smile that makes you like her instantly

She is brainy and drops the As in her subject with the boredom of a prodigy seeking more challenges

But one sweet thing about her is her determination

When her results didn’t quite hit the mark, she walked into my room and matter-of-factly told me, ‘Joe, can you enrol me in GCE?’

I smiled.

Many a night on my nocturnal journey to go raid the fridge, I see a flicker in her room as she swots over her books in preparation for the GCE

She wants to be a Gynaecologist and actually got admission to do a degree in a university in Barbados, but couldn’t go cos of the result

The minor setback has shown me the strength with which Zara is made.

No tears. No self-pity, but a strict regimen of study and a rude determination to succeed

Sadly, I’m always broke on her birthdays, which comes a few days after the Christmas festivities

This year, however, I am determined to do her good as she called me – Joe, you forgot my birthday, and I swore – how can I?

I honestly did, but Chantal had reminded me with a request for cash to take her out

Happy birthday, my princess, my sweet diamond and may God bless you with a long life and in excellent health

My princess, I love you so much
