HE Babajide SANWO-OLU – the curious case of Eniola Wasiu Ibrahim

Your Excellency, we are preparing to come to you, and as you know, I don’t know how to keep secrets, that is why I am giving you a heads up

It’s about the case of my son, Eniola Wasiu Ibrahim

He is my son cos he is a great dancer whose talent has gone a long way in bringing hope and inspiring many of our youths, something you do not joke with

Your Excellency, Wasiu failed the system, failed the community and failed you, his bigger father

He got enmeshed in an issue of a violent sexual nature and, for his efforts, bagged a life jail at the Kiri kiri maximum prison, where he has served about 5years and has shown tremendous remorse, as attested to by his handlers that I have spoken to

He says it was consensual, he says an argument broke out after sex, leading to the damaging of property, which led to violence, he says he wasn’t given a fair hearing, he says he can’t afford the cost of appeal, which is obvious and pleads for a fair hearing

All that is neither here nor there, the boy has shown a huge resolve to better contribute to society

Inside, he has led a reawakening to culture, led dance recitals, become a teacher and mentor to budding artists, and remains a committed scholar at the Open University, where he is in his third year

Your Excellency, this boy was in our Play Oba Esugbayi, and you should have seen him light the fire with the dance of life

Sad that with no prior criminal record or misdemeanour, a moment of – I don’t know what to call it, his life’s trajectory just changed

Your Excellency, I have learnt that you have not used your prerogative of mercy on lifers and condemned prisoners – I could be wrong, and I have also learnt that HE Fashola was the last to do such, and it is in this context and within the context of your rounding up a brilliant two-term that we are coming to make this appeal for clemency

As I write, the Dance Guild of Nigeria, his immediate constituency, is trying to gather weight, pulling in other critical forces within the industry to make a humble but very tearful appeal to you on this matter

Me, I am just wetting the ground cos na me discover am for prison so that when they finally get to you it will not be a shock

I’ve advised them to try and send the letter on Tuesday cos that is when you are happier, so that it will increase our chances

My Lord, God will bless you and keep you for us o.

Please, I have a big bowl of Afang for you. Where can I drop it, as Michael don stop to take my calls

Thanks so much

Your Aburo

Duke of Shomolu
