Christianity today is a cesspool of hypocrisy, and this is why it is not only failing society but failing itself
This Pastor Jimi Odukoya, who I must say I love, has become a very strong weapon with which Jehovah is using to throw up the hypocrisy that seems to be the template of modern Christianity in our country
The young man from when his late father, Pastor Odukoya, passed has continued to uproot the disjointed values that hold Christendom today
From opaque succession, through his alternative lifestyle, to the crowd he mingles with and now his marriage, he has continued to throw up very succinctly the underbelly of Pentecostal Christianity in Nigeria
Fountain of Life Church, which I will confess I was a strong member of, was set up by the very brilliant and not so oratorically gifted Pastor Taiwo Odukoya and his very beautiful wife, Pastor Bimbo
They both built the church from almost scratch to the mega status that it is today
They didn’t build it alone; they had a structure which included other senior pastors and strong members who gave their blood for the mission
I used to see this Jimi doing like Seyi Tinubu all over the place as first son of Senior pastor
He would galivant with a tattoos, plaited earings , big rings in full Area Fada mode
We all loved him for different reasons. I loved him for his daring alternative lifestyle; even though he appeared very showy, the congregation, in their full hypnotic, mumu, and hypocritical mode, would lay their gowns out for him to work over.
The church fawned over him, and whenever he was in town, he would never let us forget that he was in town – complete Seyi Tinubu mode
Then one day his Dad passed. This was the climax of a long family tragedy: from the mother passing, through the father’s twin passing, and now the father passed
A succession debate was on the offing, and I could swear that either Pastor Awosika or another senior pastor would take the mantle, only for Pastor Odukoya to allegedly whisper into the ears of Jimi that he was the one
Pronto Fountain of Life now had a full ‘punk’ in their hands as lead pastor
As expected, there were no court cases, no rebellion, as ‘the lord has spoken’
This succession threw up the spectre of family ownership of these mega churches, as Nigerians now started to look at even bigger structures where we had Papa GO and Mama GO, with little Pikin GO running the shows
As Jimi consolidated, he began to move the church towards a younger demographic; on top of advice, he changed his looks and started wearing well-made caftans and trads but left the locks, earrings, tattoos, and rings with the bikes and all of that, staying true to his true calling – punkdom
I listen to his sermons, and they remain watery, more gistlike, with a lot of screaming and motivational speaker-like rants bereft of spiritual depth
The older people started leaving, and a younger crowd took over- beautiful, and the music, dance and ethos began to reflect the new aura of the church
By now, his 8-year marriage was over against biblical injunction, and he paraded as a single pastor for a bit, still being who he is
Then he suddenly announced his marriage and got erstwhile government critic and failed presidential hopeful Pastor Tunde Bakare to come and bless his marriage
His hypocritical congregation couldn’t get enough as they screamed for joy, forgetting all the biblical injunctions their pastor was flouting by this one act
You see why I laugh at the modern Nigerian Pentecostal Christian; their arrogant stupidity marvels me
They are quick to admonish you, push a holier-than-thou positioning and yet the huge log in their eyes they fail to see
Like the one who called me shameless yesterday
Ohh Edgar, you are shameless. You have so many wives; any woman who sleeps with you is classless
This was coming from a former sister-in-law of one of the GOs whose Pastor husband had slept with almost all the females in the choir
And when I reminded her of her philandering pastor husband, she says – God will punish him for his sins; you are not him.
I laugh, so you even have a worse one in ur bed, and you are there admonishing me and calling me shameless, but you will open your legs this night for the king of the shameless who still holds the Bible
This is the hypocrisy of Christendom; from theft, sexual deviancy, fraud, apostasy, and all, you will find it in our Pentecostal churches
They are all a den of avarice, structures that have been built to enable social deviancy while giving them a colouration of piety
Women continue to be defiled, men continue to be defrauded and hoodwinked, while the leaders continue to live the life of hedonistic pleasure at the expense of the mumus who fund them
Then they will hide under – touch not my anointed- anointed kill all of you there
This is why I love this young man who has taken over a structure built on these vices and refused to be cowed into pretentious engagement and continues to do it his own way
Is it only the nose ring she has? I am sure if you look well, you will see a ring on her clit
Her business, his business, my own is that the sheer size of the fraud that is Pentecostal Christianity is what is contributing to the continuous malaise we face as a society
As Jesus told his disciples – if they don’t accept you, dust your feet and walk away
I have walked away from it since then; all na wuru wuru, not even one can be exempted.
