Brothels of my youth

One thing, you grow into in Shomolu were the brothels

They were a way of life, where you go to recharge your batteries as older people or go get your first sexual experiences as horny hormone-driven teenagers

They littered the place and were very affordable and receptive.

The premier brothel was the Juliet Hotel. It stood very proudly on Bajulaye Street just before the junction that leads you into Fola Agoro

Juliet housed Ghanaian refugees who turned to sex work for survival

They were nice and very warm. In the evenings, they would stand in front of the place hawking their wares and hustling for customers.

Africana was up the same street but nestled in a tiny untarred road that tapered off Bajulaye street

This was a little scary and mostly dimly lit. This had more Nigerians mostly of the Igbo variants as sex workers.

It was a combustible atmosphere with fights breaking out very easily. It was owned by an Igbo man and was run by his arrogant sons who walked around like they were heirs to a Russian Oligarch

Then Rosie was in Onipanu. This was Premium cos the girls were very neat and beautiful.

Pricing was high as a result and it was located at Onipanu near the huge Ikorodu road opening them to clientele outside Shomolu

Then there was Shomolu Central. This was at the upper end of Adebiyi Street near the famous Shomolu Market

It was a two-story blue building with colourful lights all over.

It was very popular with the molue drivers who went there after a hard day’s work to relax with a cold beer smoke and warm p…y

The last one was at the tail end of Bajulaye just before you crossed the little bridge to Bariga

It was not as popular as it was in a tiny one-story building, located at a very busy bus stop

The most popular was the good evening street. This was the longest strip of sin in Lagos

It started from the road that takes you from Morocco to Apata and leads across Awoseyin, Adebiyi, Sanusi and ends at Akanni

This was a good distance and you had small rooms on each side of the road and you had old ladies, mostly Ogoja women who hauled their tired bodies to survive

They were the cheapest as they were far older with little or no assets to display

They would sit on tiny stools in front of their rooms and drank strong local gin and took snuff as customers walked up and down sorting them like u do when u are looking for a not-so-spoilt mango in a tray of rotten mangoes

These brothels have all disappeared as the profession has gone to the streets first and then digital

The old classic brothel is no more, as the anonymity of prostitution as offered by a lax society and social media has now eliminated entry barriers for practitioners

Now you find practioners every where – online, churches, work place etc taking away the need to have brothels traditionally.

Those were the days, Kai

You may come and beat me now

Thanks

Duke of Shomolu
